Robin Study by Paul Apps U.A.

Birds a wonderful topic to paint as they are both delicate and yet robust. The workshop will show you how to capture the character of a bird, whether it is the inquisitiveness of a robin, the grace of a swan or the intelligence of a raven.

Alongside this, we will be focussing on tricky areas when painting birds, such as plumage and proportion.

Sunday Painting Workshop – 26th November

On Sunday 26th November I’m holding my final Sunday painting workshop of 2017 at my gallery at Marine Walk Street, Hythe.

For this session the subject will be a one of our iconic British birds, such as the robin, the gardener’s friend, the busy sparrow and the beautiful, stately swan.

Birds are a trickier subject to paint than would first appear.  It’s important to get the actual size of the bird correct whilst bird plumage requires a very delicate touch!

Sunday Painting Workshop – 29th October

There’s just a couple of spaces left on my upcoming painting workshop this Sunday (29th October) which will be held at my gallery at Marine Walk Street, Hythe.

At the workshop we’ll be painting either a landscape or a seascape with pastel pencils, a medium which has all the benefits of traditional soft pastels but are easier and less messy to work with.  There’s a wonderful range of colours and effects that you can achieve with pastel pencils too.

The workshops are relaxed, friendly and fun.  If you’ve never used pastels pencils before or have a set but don’t know how to use them to their best advantage, why not come along?

You’ll be surprised at just how versatile pastel pencils are!

The day starts at 10am with a short demonstration of the techniques I use to get the best out of pastel pencils and then it’s straight into a full day’s creativity, finishing about 4.30pm with a beautiful completed artwork.

A fish ‘n’ chip lunch is provided along with tea and coffee throughout the day.

The cost of the workshop is £90 pp.

You’ll need to bring your own pastel pencils/pastel paper.  Drawing boards are provided.

Big Cats Workshop

On Sunday 3rd September I held another of my monthly painting workshops at the gallery.  This time around it was one of my favourite subjects, the big cats.

A lion was requested as the subject of the workshop and I was happy to oblige.  Lions can be a challenge to capture on canvas at times, what with the rough texture of the fur and the unflinching stare of a top predator.

However, the group rose to the challenge and produced some really good work.  I was impressed!

Golden Majesty by Paul Apps U.A.

It was a really enjoyable day.  I prepared food beforehand for our lunch and there was ample tea and coffee to keeps us all going.  A perfect way to spend a Sunday!

If you’re interested in attending one of my Sunday painting workshops, the next one is on the 8th October.  The medium is pastel pencils and the subject matter will be either a landscape or a seascape, I haven’t made a final decision as yet!

For further details and to book a space see my website.  Hope you can make it!

En Plein Air Workshop – Rye Harbour

A group of us went down to Rye Harbour on Sunday 20th August and had a great time painting in this picturesque and tranquil location in East Sussex.

The gang in full-painting mode…

We met up about 10am and made a full day of it, painting till around 4.30pm or so.  Luckily the weather held up and we got a rain-free day along the foreshore, although by the end of the day the clouds were beginning to threaten.

The focus of many of the paintings (including mine) was this beached, derelict boat, a perfect subject within the surrounding marine setting.

Checking the proportions are right…

We broke for a substantial lunch at a nearby pub and compared notes on how our paintings were going whilst tucking into plates of very tasty food and then it was back out to continue our endeavours!

Here are some more of the photos of the day.

Giving my opinion on progress so far….

And again!

Blocking in….

Balancing the proportions….

Getting the detailing right….

Us with our finished paintings!

It was such a successful day that I’ve been asked to squeeze in another en plein air workshop and the date has been set for Sunday 1st October.

This time around we’re planning on painting on the beautiful Romney Marsh.  It should be stunning as the final days of late summer give way to the glorious colours of autumn!

Hope you can make it!
