Painting Workshop – 18th June

On Sunday 18th June I held another of my successful painting workshops at my gallery in Marine Walk Street, Hythe.

Myself with the completed seascape!

The subject was a seascape in either oils or acrylic and it was a friendly and fun session. Despite the heat, the day was well attended and the participants really enjoyed it.  It was great to welcome back old friends and to make new ones.

The image that we worked on was of the sea and promenade at Princes Parade, Hythe on a blustery day with the waves crashing along the shoreline, kites being flown and windsurfers bobbing over the waves.

A close-up of the seascape.

The day started with a demo by myself where I showed some hints and tips on how to really capture the characteristics of a seascape such as how best to paint breaking waves and spray.

It was then onto painting for the rest of the day apart from a break for a fish ‘n’ chip lunch.  The participants really made an excellent job of their paintings and were very happy with their efforts!

The next Sunday Painting Workshop is on 3rd September and the subject is Big Cats, one of my favourites.  The price for the day is £90 including lunch.  See my website for further details.

There are only a few spaces left so book now to reserve your place. Hope to see you there!

En Plein Air Workshop at Dungeness

On Sunday 11th June I held my first en plain air workshop of the year and it was a great day of painting.  Luckily, the weather stayed dry for us, it was a bit blowy though but not enough to spoil the day!

The day was very well attended with participants who are old hands at en plain air as well as  beginners.  It was really good fun and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely!

Pensively, Sam realised that he might not have caught the lighthouse to its best advantage.

We spent the morning painting and then had a tasty pub lunch at the Britannia (where we had a an unexpected visitor!) before resuming for an enjoyable afternoon session.

Our visitor at the Britannia…

Here are some further images of the day!

The next en plain air workshop day is on Sunday 16th July at the iconic Fisherman’s Beach, Hythe with its shingle foreshore, fishing boats and Martello towers.

The day costs £65.00. BOOK NOW to reserve your space as places are extremely limited.

Hope to see you there!

Dungeness Plein Air Workshop on Sunday

This last Sunday I had five students with me for a great days plein air painting in the wilderness expanse of Dungeness on the Southeast tip of the UK in Kent.

untitled-991

None of my students had ever ventured outside to paint in the Plein Air manner before, but each copied very well. The wind was as it always is most evident, causing us to seek sheltered viewpoints wherever possible.

untitled-938

This was the first demonstration that I completed for them all, the lighthouse is an amazing landmark this is a 7″ x 16″ panel.

untitled-940

Then it was their turn, spreading themselves around the shingle each chose the viewpoint that most excited them.

untitled-942

Even if i had some walking to do over that shingle beach…… Though in June the wildflowers are out in abundance and beautify the Ness in spectacular colour. It was a treat to include and suggest their presence in our work.

All too soon it was time for lunch…. A pint and a natter in the well known Britannia P.H, located just a few feet away. Then we relocated near to where all the old net sheds are located and I made a second demo of the day shown below.

After my students had painted once more we ended the day back inside the Britannia for a drink and a wind down… They all left satisfied, tired and i hope looking forward to doing more plein air studies.
